In this work a variable diameter wheel (VDW) is presented. Two VDWs are combined in a manner where motion can be transmitted between these VDWs. The scope is limited to a kinematics analysis of a mechanism consisting of two VDWs. First the VDW is explained using a patent submitted by Charles Hoberman. Then a mechanism couples each wheel to a shaft. This mechanism controls the diameter of the wheels. Further, a sub-mechanism is designed to synchronize the change in wheel diameters in order for them to remain in contact. The sub-mechanism consists of a rotating plate with grooves. Coordinate trans formations are used to obtain groove paths that synchronize each wheel diameter. The mobility of the entire mechanism is determined. Subsequently, a vector loop equation is written to obtain the VDW dimensions. After the entire mechanism is developed, certain design parameters that affect speed ratio range are explored. At the end, possible motion transmission means between wheels are suggested.en_US
