dc.description.abstractA sequence stratigraphic model and facies distribution model was created for Middle- Tertiary rocks exposed on the east side of Guánica Bay. The models are based on lithology, fossil content, integrated with microfacies interpretation. The models use fieldwork data precisely, portraying an interpretation that integrates facies relationship and scale. Nine facies were identified in the study areas; exhibiting from allochemic sandstones to well developed carbonate reef facies. Depositional environments include platform margin, platform interior, slope and toe-of slope. The facies model was used for the identification of shallowing upward sequences and flooding surfaces, to correlate and interpret in sequence stratigraphic terms. At least 3 sequence boundaries were identified of 4th order or higher inside 4 depositional sequences. The sequence stratigraphic model shows the effect of tectonic influence in the deposition of a mixed carbonate siliciclastic system.
dc.description.abstractUn modelo se estratigrafía secuencial y un modelo de distribución de facies fueron creados para las rocas pertenecientes al Terciario Medio expuestas en el lado este de la bahía de Guánica. Los modelos están basados en la litología y contenido de fósiles, integrados en interpretación de microfacies. Los modelos usan información obtenida en el área de estudio que integra la relación entra los facies y la escala. Nueve facies fueron identificadas, incluyendo facies de carbonatos muy desarrolladas. Los ambientes deposicionales interpretados en el estudio incluyen el margen e interior de la plataforma y marino abierto. El modelo de facies fue usado para identificar secuencias que indiquen aguas llanas en el tope y superficies de inundación para correlacionar e interpretar la zona en términos de estratigrafía secuencial. Al menos 4 secuencias deposicionales y 3 límites de secuencias identificadas de cuarto orden o mayores. El modelo de estratigrafía secuencial creado plasma la influencia de la tectónica regional en la deposición de sistemas de mezcla siliciclásticos y carbonaticos.
