Estudios de Brunfelsia densifolia Krug & Urb. (Solanaceae), una planta endémica rara.

Abstract

Brunfelsia densifolia Krug & Urb. (Solanaceae) is a rare plant, endemic to the Maricao Forest Reserve, of which very little is known. A search for individuals was carried out in the forest, and a study was conducted of its population structure, its reproductive phenology, its environment, and whether phenotypic differences could exist among the populations inside the forest. Recommendations were made relating to the species’ conservation, based on an evaluation that was made using IUCN criteria. More than 70% of the population consisted of seedlings and only 35 juveniles were counted. Of 109 mature individuals that were counted, only 58.7% produced reproductive structures. Significant differences were found in the length-width ratio of the leaves among the populations, indicating a phenotypic difference. The survival of the seedlings and juveniles is high during the period of sampling but the perspective changes upon analyzing the population data. The production of flowers is very synchronous and its peak is limited to a couple of weeks during the rainy season. The number of mature fruits was very low even during the peak and was also presented during the rainy season.

Brunfelsia densifolia Krug & Urb. (Solanaceae) es una planta rara, endémica del Bosque Estatal de Maricao, de la cual se sabe muy poco. Se realizó una búsqueda de individuos por el bosque y se siguió un estudio a su estructura poblacional, su fenología reproductiva, su entorno y si podían existir diferencias fenotípicas entre las poblaciones dentro del bosque. Se hicieron recomendaciones sobre la especie encaminadas a su conservación, de acuerdo a la evaluación que se le hizo bajo los criterios de la UICN. Más del 70% de la población estaba constituido por plántulas y tan sólo se contaron 35 juveniles. Se registraron 109 individuos adultos, de los cuales sólo el 58.7% produjeron estructuras reproductivas. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en cuanto a la relación largo/ancho de las hojas entre las poblaciones, indicando una diferencia fenotípica. La supervivencia de las plántulas y juveniles es alta durante el período de muestreo pero la perspectiva cambia al analizar los datos poblacionales. La producción de flores es muy sincrónica y su pico se limita a un par de semanas durante la estación de lluvias. El número de frutos maduros fue muy bajo aun durante el pico y se presentó también durante la estación lluviosa.
