Abstract
The first short story anthologies by Miriam M. González-Hernández are Calez y otros espejismos, Deshojando arenas and Miradas. “Calez” and “La casa” are in the first volume, “Arenas” and “Fuego” are in the second one, and “El Abadón” and “Inhumación” are in the third one. These stories are the focus of study in this thesis research. Drawing on Violeta Rojo’s work on her “Manual para reconocer minicuentos” this thesis argues that these tales are minirrelatos. This research also places González-Hernández within the literary movement known as the Generation of 1980 based on the literary elements discussed in the essay by Alberto Martínez-Márquez “Apuntes sobre la narrativa breve puertorriqueña a partir de los 80.” This thesis concludes with the analysis of the apocalyptic discourse present in González-Hernández’s work as defined by Norman Rufus Collin Cohn in En pos del milenio and by Carmen Méndez-López in “Movimientos mileniaristas, mesiánicos y de revitalización.”
