The purpose on this thesis is to give a clear view of the most representative Puerto Rican literature work of the XX century, analyzing the construction of the geographical, cultural, social and political space, most specific the littoral space, as a vital point on the national and cultural identity definition. The first chapter gives some ideas on the real and fictional space and the landscape. The second chapter proposes that the theme of racism is spatially constructed in Insularismo of Antonio S. Pedreira. The third chapter analyzes the spatial metaphors of Balada de otro tiempo by José Luis González. The forth chapter examines the architectural space of the house and the symbolism that encloses the space of the mangrove in La casa de la laguna by Rosario Ferré. Last chapter studies the carnivalization of the costal space and their subjects in El cruce de la Bahía de Guánica by Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá.en_US
