Abstract
This thesis presents the results of the design of residential housing using welded wire mesh reinforcement (WWR) and the lineal evaluation of the shear walls reinforced with WWR under dynamic loadings. Typical residential structures in Puerto Rico with concrete shear walls to resist lateral loads were chosen to evaluate the behavior of these walls. Six (6) structures were chosen: two (2) structures with only one floor, two (2) structures with two stories and two (2) structures with three (3) stories. The main structural components to resist lateral loads on the structure are the concrete shear walls in both directions. The objective of this study is to use welded wire fabric (WWF) reinforcement in the design of structural elements on the structures such as: concrete slabs, shear walls, wall footings. As matter of comparison, the design was performed using conventional steel. Once the design was completed, a dynamic loading was performed, using seven (7) time-histories of different seismic events to understand the behavior of the shear walls. Structural analysis was performed using Extended Three-dimensional Analysis of Building Systems (Etabs) software and the loads considered in the analysis were dead, live, and seismic and wind loads based on the Puerto Rico Building Code which used the International Building Code 2009. Results from the analysis performed for all applicable load combinations and the most critical combinations were used to perform the design of all structural elements using wire mesh and conventional reinforcement. Per stresses from the dynamic analysis the structures designed with shear walls on both directions do not exceed the linear range, however the buildings with reduced amount of shear walls combined with block walls may go beyond the linear range and further non-linear evaluation is needed or regular steel reinforcement can be used for these cases. For future studies, it is recommended to evaluate structures that did have shear walls but are combined with masonry walls to determine whether or not can perform well due to the fact that the reduced ductility of walls designed using WWR compared with regular reinforcement.
