Efecto de época, carga animal y suplementación sobre el crecimiento post-destete de toretes Senepol x Charolais

Abstract

The experiment was conducted in order to determine the effects of stocking rate and level of wheat middling’s supplementation on weight gains young bullocks, and on pasture availability and chemical composition. The trials were carried out at the Corozal Agricultural Experiment Substation and were replicated on two consecutive years. Within each year, 45 Senepol x Charolais (279.2 ± 3.22 kg) were randomly allotted in nine groups of five animals each. All animals grazed tropical grass pastures in alternate paddocks. Treatments considered were three stocking rates (2.5, 3.0 and 3.7 bullocks ha-1) and three supplementation rates with wheat middlings (0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 % of live weight), under a complete randomized block (year) design with a split-split plot arrangement (stocking rate and supplementation). The results indicate that stocking rate and supplementation level effects were significant and the weight gain obtained, even at the highest stocking rate, averaged 0.742 ± 0.67 kg d-1, which is considerably higher than those obtained under similar conditions without supplementation. It seems that a viable alternative is to further increase the stocking rate in order to obtain higher production per area unit.

La investigación se realizó con el objetivo de determinar los efectos de la carga animal y del nivel de suplementación con afrecho de trigo sobre las ganancias de peso vivo de toretes y sobre la disponibilidad y composición química del forraje. La investigación se llevó a cabo en la Subestación Experimental Agrícola de Corozal y se repitió en dos años consecutivos. En cada año, se utilizaron 45 toretes Senepol x Charolais (279.2 ± 3.22 kg) que se distribuyeron aleatoriamente en nueve grupos de cinco animales que pastorearon, en forma alternada, praderas de gramíneas tropicales. Los tratamientos considerados fueron tres cargas animales (2.5, 3.0 y 3.7 toretes ha-1) y tres niveles de suplementación con afrecho de trigo (0.5, 0.7 y 0.9 % del PV) bajo un diseño de bloques (años) con arreglo de parcelas sub-divididas (carga animal y suplementación). Los resultados indicaron que los efectos de carga animal y suplementación fueron significativos. las ganancias de peso obtenidas, aún con la carga más alta, promediaron 0.742 ± 0.67 kg d-1 y fueron mayores a las que se obtienen bajo condiciones similares sin suplementación. Se infiere que una alternativa viable es aumentar aún más la carga para obtener mayores producciones por unidad de superficie.
