Oral history interview with Yamilet Aponte Claudio, April 2, 2022

Abstract

Yamilet Aponte Claudio is currently majoring in Journalism, with a minor concentration in Accounting and Foreign Languages. I chose her for this project because I based the climate justice issue I chose for this on one of her articles titled El sargazo y los esfuerzos del Caribe. During the interview, we discussed the current status of the extent of Sargassum on the shores of Puerto Rico. We talked about proposals made by the government and non-profit organizations involved in the efforts of removing Sargassum in the most efficient and sustainable ways, such as other factors that are being affected by this situation. Some of them are the risk of extinction of the turtles, the lack of good water quality for our society, and the tourism quality, which is one of the main sources of economy for our island and therefore, is a serious problem for our society and our incomes.

Yamilet Aponte Claudio actualmente estudia Periodismo, con concentraciones menores en Contabilidad e Idiomas Extranjeros. La seleccioné para este proyecto porque basé el tema de justicia clímatica que escogí en uno de sus artículos titulado "El sargazo y los esfuerzos del Caribe". Durante la entrevista, discutimos el estado actual de la extensión del sargazo en las costas de Puerto Rico. Hablamos de las propuestas hechas por el gobierno y las organizaciones sin fines de lucro involucradas en los esfuerzos para remover el sargazo de la manera más eficiente y sostenible, así como de otros factores que están siendo afectados por esta situación. Algunos son el riesgo de extinción de las tortugas, la falta de buena calidad de agua para nuestra sociedad y la calidad del turismo. Este último punto representa un problema serio para nuestra sociedad y nuestros ingresos, ya que el turismo es una de las principales fuentes de economía para nuestra isla.
