Abstract
Intermodal cargo containers, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) containers, are use in a daily basis for transportation of merchandize. The development of the intermodal cargo containers focused on versatility, and thus, their application has reached far beyond their initial intent. Presently, intermodal cargo containers can be converted into Life Support Areas and Tactical Operations Centers in contingency operations where the ease of relocation or modularity for reconfiguration is important. During contingency operations, transient, high intensity loadings such as blast pressures can be imposed on intermodal cargo containers. Therefore, to improve the protection of the personnel inside the containers, it is important to understand the effects of transient, high intensity loadings on containers. This research had four objectives: (1) characterize the effects of blast on modular relocatable buildings (MRLBs), (2) develop and validate a computational model, (3) optimize the internal finish of the container and (4) calculate the stiffness of the ISO containers based on a failure mode. Full-scale tests were conducted on the MRLBs to characterize the blast effects for two different configurations: (i) W-MRLB or wood stud and plywood construction and (ii) S-MRLB or steel stud and sheet metal-backed drywall construction. The numerical model was validated using the W-MRLB full-scale blast test and the composite wall stiffness was derived by the used of dynamic relaxation.
