Abstract

This investigation studies the construction of transvestites in Sirena Selena vestida de pena and it demonstrates that the novel supposes a study of genders and it proposes a space in which new perspectives of genre can be analyzed by Kristeva’s theoretical frame. We analyze the following linguistic aspects: person indicators; declarative modalities that indicate attitude; adjectives; and the relation of the actant with the discourse, as well as their performance. The text confronts gender stereotypes and it invites us to break with stigmas to originate something new: subjects, social structures and roles that prevail on the repression and the prejudices. When individuals change, the system they live in changes. In this matter, this text has a social, philosophical and psychological reach that places it as a universal literary piece. Another contribution is the study of the marginal sexuality as a literary theme in Puerto Rico, and for that we initiated the work with a historiography route on the marginalized genres and its treatment in our literature.

Esta investigación analiza la construcción del travesti en Sirena Selena vestida de pena y pretende demostrar que la novela supone un estudio del género y propone un espacio en el que se conciertan nuevas perspectivas genéricas que pueden ser analizadas a raíz del marco teórico que establece Julia Kristeva. Analizamos los siguientes aspectos lingüísticos: indicadores de persona, modalidades enunciativas que indican actitud, adjetivos y la relación del actante con los enunciados, así como sus movimientos. El texto confronta los estereotipos genéricos y nos invita a romper con los estigmas y los márgenes para originar algo nuevo: sujetos, estructuras sociales y roles que triunfan sobre la represión y los prejuicios. Al cambiar en el sentido individual, cambiamos el sistema en el que vivimos. De esta forma, la obra tiene un alcance social, filosófico y psicológico que trasciende lo regional y la coloca como una pieza literaria universal. Otra aportación importante es el estudio de la sexualidad marginal como tema literario en Puerto Rico y para ello iniciamos el trabajo con un recorrido historiográfico sobre los géneros marginados y su tratamiento en nuestra literatura.
