We have studied the preparation of ordered silver structures in solution using wet scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. Silver structures are prepared from the reaction between silver cations and an alkyl thiol with a carboxylic acid terminal group. In the presence of large amounts of water round droplets are observed in solutions of the alkyl thiol and silver. The formation of these droplets results from the low miscibility of the organic molecule in water and is observed only when silver is added to the solution. Vibrational spectroscopy measurements reveal the loss of the S-H stretch upon addition of the silver cation to the alkyl thiol solution. Interestingly, these silver thiolate round structures are only observed in solution. Two-dimensional structures emerge after drying-off the solution. In solution, the morphology of these droplets is markedly changed upon the addition of sodium nitrite to the solution: ordered silver spheres are formed. The addition of NaNO2 resulted in the formation of three dimensional microspheres that have different sizes and display an ordered pattern. Electrostatic interactions among the spheres are proposed to drive the observed long range order in solution, while magnetic interactions are proposed to play an important role in the short-range induced order. Computer simulations of the Lorentz field for point charges and clusters of point charges are consistent with this interpretation.
