    Supply chain flexibility is a critical capability for manufacturers to respond quickly to changes in market demand. However, implementing flexibility can introduce unwanted variability that can compromise process stability. This study addresses this challenge by examining the level of flexibility required to meet customer needs and material interruptions without sacrificing process stability. The study utilizes a system dynamics model to evaluate the impact of different flexible and non-flexible scenarios on responsiveness and variability at the manufacturer level in a two-echelon supply chain. Lot size variation and machine capabilities are considered drivers of flexibility. The analysis provides valuable managerial insights to help manufacturers determine the necessary trade-offs to achieve a viable flexibilization scheme. The research proposes a novel simulation-based method to measure responsiveness, which can help manufacturers assess their ability to adapt to changing market conditions. The results highlight the crucial role that the manufacturer’s flexibility plays in the supply chain and provide an understanding of how the manufacturer’s ability to adapt to changes in demand or supply disruptions quickly is essential for driving improved service levels throughout the supply chain. Building solid relationships with suppliers and having open communication channels can help increase the level of flexibility and stability. The research findings provide valuable insights into using system dynamics models for supply chain management research and open avenues for further studies. Additionally, the system dynamics model developed in this research has the potential to serve as a decision-making tool for companies and as an educational tool for teaching students about supply chain dynamics and the impact of different management strategies.
