Publication Characterization and redesign of rubber-to-metal molded vascular clamp inserts(2018-12-03) Arroyo-Solá, Sol; Quintero, Pedro O.; College of Engineering; Valentin, Ricky; Resto, Pedro; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Muñoz, JonathanThis work is a first step into the characterization of the rubber-to-metal bonded components in vascular clamp applications. Using ASTM standards, test methods were modified, developed, and implemented to perform characterization studies on Fogarty-Hydragrip clamp inserts and provide a baseline for a redesigned product. Adhesive strength and coefficient of friction were the two main parameters studied in this work, with supporting testing done for clamping strength and traction force. The redesign consisted of surface-treated adherends to promote adhesion and different LSR polymers tested against a baseline of the current in-use clamp inserts manufactured with a chemical adhesive to evaluate performance of the product. It was confirmed that a redesigned adherend with mechanical interlocking had significantly higher adhesive strength, and the static and dynamic responses of the clamp inserts was characterized. Influence of lubricants in the clamp’s operation and the studied parameters was also investigated.
