Through a case study approach, this research investigates the perspectives of parents and tutors regarding private supplementary tutoring (PST). Findings showcase determinants for the motivated use of PST from parents who enroll their elementary-school level children in private schools, as well as tutors who teach elementary-school children from private schools. This thesis explored the financial, social, and psychological aspects which may or may not influence parental use of PST in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Congruency among both populations (parents and tutors) demonstrates that factors surrounding the use of PST relate to parental time limitations, parents’ unfamiliarity with subject areas, and the provision of emotional security. Moreover, results conclude that PST is used to maintain or increase student performance, specifically for higher grade scores and developing student self-confidence.
