Publication Perfil descriptivo y económico de los miembros de la Asociación de Apicultores de Puerto Rico Inc.(2021-12-08) Planell Fernandini, Manuel E.; Comas Pagán, Myrna; College of Agricultural Sciences; Padilla Velez, David; Santiago Andino, Edly; Department of Agricultural Education; Quiñones Otal, EmiliaThe purpose of this study is to describe a demographic profile of the members of the Asociación de Apicultores de Puerto Rico Inc. To evaluate the characteristics of their farms, beekeeping business, their problems and needs and strategies of the Agricultural Extension Service to educate beekeepers. The association had 45 members and the sample size of this study was 40 beekeepers (89%). A questionnaire was made to collect the data and the results were analyzed using Microsoft Office Excel. Results suggest that 80% of the beekeepers are men, 72% are married, over 60% are above the age of 50, 55% have a college degree and 47% maintain bees because they are interested in honey. Beekeeping is not the primary income of the beekeepers. Also, 50% of the beekeepers have small apiaries. Most of them used basic protection equipment such as: gloves, veils, smoker and suits. Most of the farms were less than 10 acres and 10 hives per apiarie, but most are managed by a single beekeeper. Although the principal product is honey, some of them produce bee wax, pollen, propolis and pollination services. Beekeepers indicate that the most important limitation for the beekeeping industry is the lack of incentive programs from the government. Also, most of the beekeepers do not know the Agricultural Extension Service program. The strategies used by the Agricultural Extension Service to educate beekeepers are conferences and training.
