Publication Synthesis and characterization of metal-doped titanium dioxide and treatability studies for photo-degrading atrazine and methylene blue under spectrum of UV and visible light(2021-05-14) Lacen Marte, Alba R.; Tarafa Vélez, Pedro J.; College of Engineering; Rodríguez Abudo, Sylvia B.; Suárez, O. Marcelo; Muñoz Barreto, Jonathan; Department of Civil Engineering; Resto Irizarry, Pedro J.TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized and doped with metals ions such as iron (Fe +3) and tungsten (W+4) to achieve photocatalytic properties under the visible light spectrum then TiO2 nanocomposite where immobilized within a PVC-matrix. Modified TiO2 nanoparticles were characterized by UV/vis spectrometry, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. It was observed a reduction in the bandgap activation energy for the W-doped TiO2 nanoparticles while Fe-doped nanoparticles increase them bandgap activation energy. The treatability studies for the WxTi1-xO2 nanoparticles showed a direct relationship between the photocatalytic activity and the dopant (W) concentration and degradation under visible lights spectrum was obtained. Also, it was found that the photocatalytic activity of WxTi1-xO2 nanoparticles increased with both thermal treatment temperatures and time during the doping process. On the other hand, treatability studies for Fe-doped TiO2 indicates that iron inhibits TiO2’s photo catalytic properties. Finally, an impregnation technique to immobilize the TiO2 nanoparticles on a PVC matrix was successfully carried out.
