Publication Relación entre los principales linajes Indígenas del ADN Mitocondrial en las Islas de Puerto Rico y República Dominicana(2014) Tascón Peñaranda, Edna P.; Martínez Cruzado, Juan C.; College of Arts and Sciences - Sciences; Oleksyk, Taras K.; Bird Picó, Fernando J.; Department of Biology; Santana, CarmenIt is well known that indigenous mitochondrial haplogroups A and C are predominant in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Medium networks built of sequences of the hypervariable regions of mtDNA have identified 13 lineages belonging to these haplogroups in Puerto Rico and 20 in the Dominican Republic. Specifically, we have identified 9 lineages for haplogroup A in Puerto Rico and 14 lineages in the Dominican Republic, of which are 4 shared with Puerto Rico. In relation to haplogroup C, 4 lineages were found in Puerto Rico and 6 in the Dominican Republic, 2 of which are shared with each other. The purpose of this research was to identify the continental origin of these maternal lineages by complete sequencing (16,569 bp) of mtDNA at least one of each of these lineages in each country. Comparing these sequences with mtDNA lineages of literature by phylogenetic analysis, it was found that for haplogroup A2, samples of Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic had a Mesoamerican origin. In relation to haplogroup C1, results indicate that lineages C1c and C1b keep a closer relationship with South American lineages.
