Publication Evaluación económica de un sistema de vermicomposta para la industria cafetalera de Puerto Rico.(2008) Estupiñán, Milton F.; González-Martínez, Gladys M.; College of Agricultural Sciences; González, Jorge A.; Monroig, Francisco M.; Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology; López Méndez, Héctor O.An economical feasibility study was performed for a vermicomposting system using coffee pulp in Puerto Rico. The continuous flow reactor, plastic recipient and bed systems were evaluated at different coffee processing scales assuming that the vermicompost will be sold from the farm by tons. The commercialization of vermicompost in a 20 pounds presentation using the bed system was analyzed and an economic analysis was performed to consider the substitution of inorganic fertilizers with vermicompost. Although none of the systems were feasible using prices of similar products in the market, the bed system shows the best economics results. To be considered feasible, a vermicompost produced in bed systems must be sold at a minimum of $1.86, $1.06, $0.85, $0.78 y $0.74 per pound for the processing scales under study. Fertilize with vermicompost resulted 18 times more expensive than using inorganic fertilizers.
