Determinación de períodos fundamentales del suelo mediante vibración ambiental en las comunidades de Jardines del Caribe y La Playa, Puerto Rico

Due to the seismic risk of Puerto Rico, this project was conducted to estimate the fundamental periods of vibration of the soil deposits in the areas of Jardines del Caribe and La Playa, respectively communities of Mayagüez and Añasco. These areas were chosen not for their population density, but for their proximity to the Mona canyon and for being at the mouth of the Río Grande of Añasco, low ground vibration frequencies could be expected. This will avoid the phenomenon of resonance that consists of the coincidence of the periods of vibration between the soil deposit and the structure at the time of the occurrence of an earthquake. For the purpose, the Nakamura method also known as the H/V spectral ratio method was used. It is simple, easy to repeat and inexpensive tool for characterizing soil deposits only using environmental vibration measurements. An amount of 89 measurements of environmental vibration were taken in the areas of interest, then processed to obtain the fundamental periods of the different soil deposits. Finally, the data collected was used to generate an isoperiod map using the ArcGIS platform.
