The objective of this investigation was to study the effect of the slick hair genotype (SH) on the concentration of progesterone, insulin and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in dairy heifers. The estrus of Holstein heifers [n=14 SH and n=14 wild type (WT)] was synchronized using a 5-day timed artificial insemination protocol (5TAI). Progesterone concentration was measured on serum obtained on days -3, -2, 0, 7, and 14 of the 5TAI. In addition, insulin concentration was measured on plasma obtained on days -8, -2 and 2 and NEFA concentration on day -8. Progesterone concentration from the days -3 to 0 (P = 0.844) and 0 to 14 (P = 0.235) was similar among the SH and WT genotypes. Progesterone concentration decreased (P < 0.0001) from day -3 to 0 (4.17 ± 0.33 ng/mL, 0.30 ± 0.33 ng/mL, and 0.08 ± 0.33 ng/mL, respectively) and increased (P < 0.0001) from day 0 to 14 (0.08 ± 0.76 ng/mL, 3.53 ± 0.76 ng/mL, and 13.58 ± 0.76 ng/mL, respectively). In the case of insulin concentration, there was a genotype x day effect (P = 0.014) only on day –8 (P = 0.049), were SH heifers had lower concentration than WT (11.79 ± 1.39 μU/mL and 15.77 ±1.44 μU/mL, respectively). In addition, there was a time effect (P < 0.0001) where insulin concentration from the PM sample was greater than the AM sample (16.57 ± 0.75 μU/mL and 12.78 ± 0.70 μU/mL, respectively). Meanwhile, NEFA concentration was similar (P = 0.1635) between slick hair heifers and wild type. In conclusion, there was a genotype x day effect for insulin concentration on day -8 of the protocol.
