Abstract
The most immediate and visible effect of hurricanes on agriculture is damage to crops, livestock, household property, productive assets, and physical infrastructure. These damages can lead to food shortages at the household, community, and sometimes national levels, and almost always lead to reduced livelihood security and related food access problems for poor households (FAO, 1999). The main objective of this research is to estimate the losses in agricultural companies of coffee and banana after the landfall of Hurricane Maria through Puerto Rico. This study was developed to accurately obtain the economic losses of agricultural companies. Through interviews with farmers, data has been collected in order to know the losses of structures, equipment and materials of the farms. A methodological design has been used applying a quantitative instrument and a qualitative technique to farmers of the banana and coffee companies throughout Puerto Rico with the objective of estimating the losses of these companies. The most important results show that an estimated structure loss of $395,515 was recorded on average. The average cost of it was $458,015. The average estimate of loss of equipment and machinery was $11,900 while the cost for all participants of the equipment and machinery was $104,000.
