Oral history interview with R.C., October 8, 2022

Abstract

R.C. is a history teacher in the southern town of Lajas. He was born in Mayagüez and was raised in the neighboring town of Hormigueros. Ever since the Spanish colonized Puerto Rico in the sixteenth century, Christmas celebrations have always been intimately intertwined with Puerto Rican culture. R.C. reminisces about some of his most cherished memories associated with the holidays as he grew up in the 1980s, but at the same time, reflects on certain experiences, songs, and Christmas traditions that highlight socioeconomic inequity among the Puerto Rican population that are often unperceived by many, including himself when he was younger.

R.C. es profesor de historia en el pueblo sureño de Lajas. Nació en Mayagüez y se crio en el pueblo vecino de Hormigueros. Desde que los españoles colonizaron Puerto Rico en el siglo XVI, las celebraciones navideñas siempre han estado íntimamente entrelazadas con la cultura puertorriqueña. R.C. recuerda algunos de sus recuerdos más preciados asociados con las fiestas mientras crecía en los 1980s, pero al mismo tiempo, reflexiona sobre ciertas experiencias, canciones y tradiciones navideñas que resaltan la inequidad socioeconómica entre la población puertorriqueña que a menudo pasa desapercibida para muchos, incluido él mismo cuando era más joven.
