Abstract
y Lajas (1,143-1,725 kg ha-1).
Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Mill] are important legumes planted in Puerto Rico. The objectives of this research were to: (1) evaluate the response of recently developed common germplasm to the fungus Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goidanich, and (2) compare the agronomic performance of hybrids versus pigeonpea genotypes. UPR-Mp-37 and UPR-Mp-48 white common bean genotypes had an intermediate response to PRI21, PRI22, and PRI23M M. phaseolina isolates in the greenhouse and field trials in Isabela and Lajas. Both genotypes had a genetic gain for resistance to M. phaseolina > 25% compared to ‘Beníquez’ and ‘Verano’ which were susceptible in all evaluations. In pigeonpea, 13KLAF1, LA13KF1 hybrids, and UPE-4 breeding line had > 102% gain for seed yield than ‘Lazaro’ in Isabela (2,890-3,112 kg ha-1) and Lajas (1,143-1,725 kg ha-1).
