Oral history interview with Amelia Ruiz-Ruiz, September 28, 2022

Abstract

Amelia Ruiz Ruiz is a farmer in Maricao. Since she was a child, agriculture has been a big part of her life. She is the tenth of eleven siblings. Since there were so many siblings and her father was the only source of income, they experienced poverty. But despite everything, they always managed to find something to fill their stomachs. Their main livelihood came from agriculture; from what his father grew on the farm. Amelia is a mother of four and grandmother of eleven. Throughout her life she has always carried on the recipes she learned from her mother. Recipes mostly made with ingredients she can find on her farm. Among her favorite recipes are: "vianda con bacalao”, "pasteles", coffee made from scratch, and "sorullos”. Amelia also tells us about the difficulties faced, as a farmer on the island. How difficult it is to work the land and how little they get monetarily. In addition to all this, there is the farmers' terror: weather phenomena, such as hurricanes and storms. With their strong winds and rain, they destroy the hard work, sweat, effort and take away the livelihood of many farmers. "The life of a farmer is difficult, very difficult." Amelia Ruiz Ruiz es una agricultora en el pueblo de Maricao. Desde que era pequeña, la agricultura ha formado gran parte de su vida. Ella es la décima de once hermanos. Como eran tantos hermanos y su padre la única fuente de ingresos, mientras crecía, vivieron en pobreza. A pesar de todo, siempre se las arreglaban para encontrar algo con lo que llenar el estómago. Su principal sustento provenía de la agricultura; de lo que su padre cultivaba en la finca. Amelia es una madre de cuatro hijos y abuela de once. A lo largo de su vida siempre ha llevado consigo las recetas que aprendió de su madre. Recetas que están hechas en su mayoría con ingredientes que puede encontrar en su finca. Entre sus recetas favoritas están: las viandas con bacalao, pasteles, café hecho desde cero y sorullos. Amelia también nos cuenta cerca de las dificultades a las que se enfrenta un agricultor en la isla. Lo difícil que es trabajar la tierra y lo poco que reciben monetariamente. A todo esto se suma el terror de los agricultores: los fenómenos meteorológicos, como huracanes y tormentas. Con sus fuertes vientos y lluvias, destruyen el trabajo duro, el sudor, el esfuerzo y se llevan el sustento de muchos agricultores. "La vida de un agricultor es difícil, muy difícil".
