Oral history interview with anonymous narrator, October 28, 2022

Abstract

The narrator is a professional doctor and head medic in a clinic. Therefore, the narrator's services are highly important to many patients, especially the elderly and poor. The events of Hurricane Maria severely damaged the clinic and the workers’ routine; therefore, the work was not running well for weeks. Due to the power outages, the clinic lost its medications and vaccines; they were unable to fully help their patients in need. Mayagüez’s countryside roads were blocked with debris and some patients were also unable to walk, consequently, the narrator and her co-workers had to travel and visit these patients at their homes. They were able to complete these duties with the help of the national guard and the Mayagüez government. The narrator was astonished when visiting these places and describes the extreme poverty in these places and how people lost their homes and many other belongings. The points and details the narrator mentions in this interview demonstrate the financial crisis Puerto Rico is in and how unprepared the island is in case of a natural disaster.

La persona narradora es médico profesional y dirige una clínica médica. Por lo tanto, sus servicios son muy importantes para muchos pacientes, especialmente los ancianos y los pobres. Los eventos del huracán María dañaron severamente la clínica y la rutina de los trabajadores; por lo tanto, el trabajo no funcionó bien durante semanas. Debido a los cortes de luz, la clínica perdió sus medicamentos y vacunas; no pudieron ayudar completamente a sus pacientes necesitados. Los caminos rurales de Mayagüez estaban bloqueados con escombros y algunos pacientes tampoco podían caminar, por lo que la persona narradora y sus compañeros de trabajo tuvieron que viajar y visitar a estos pacientes en sus hogares. Pudieron completar estos deberes con la ayuda de la guardia nacional y el gobierno de Mayagüez. La persona narradora se asombró al visitar estos lugares y describe la extrema pobreza en estos lugares y cómo la gente perdió sus casas y muchas otras pertenencias. Los puntos y detalles que la persona narradora menciona en esta entrevista demuestran la crisis financiera en la que se encuentra Puerto Rico y cuán poco preparada está la isla en caso de un desastre natural.
