Oral history interview with Carmen Mojica Quiñones, November 17, 2022

Abstract

Carmen Mojica Quiñones is a retired art teacher living in Barrio Voladoras Moca. She lives alone with her dog “Blacky”. Currently her favorite hobbys are going to the casino and going to eat with her family in different municipalities in Puerto Rico. Sometimes when she is alone in her house, she takes out her canvas, art brushes and paint and starts painting. When Carmen was young, she always loved school but when she fell in love, she was obligated to leave school for a while. Now at 81 years of age her perspective has changed since times have changed. Back then kids had to obey their parents in everything they said, so Carmen had to leave school so that she could learn what a housewife does for her future husband. Now she understands that what happened in high school, her leaving school just because she fell in love it was sexism by her mother. This was because back then women were supposed to stay home taking care of the household chores and taking care of their kids while their men worked. Nowadays we can see that a woman can do the same things a man can do and a man can do the same things the woman can.

Carmen Mojica Quiñones es una maestra de arte retirada viviendo en el barrio Voladoras Moca en Puerto Rico. Ella vive sola en su casa junto a su perro “Blacky”. Actualmente sus pasatiempos favoritos son ir a el casino para jugar en las maquinas e ir a comer en familia para diferentes pueblos en Puerto Rico. Cuando a veces esta en su casa sin hacer nada saca su canvas, pinceles y pinturas y se pone a pintar. Cuando joven a Carmen siempre le gustó la escuela pero por enamorarse se vio en la obligación de dejarla por un tiempo. Ahora a sus 81 años la perspectiva de Carmen ha cambiado un poco ya que los tiempos han cambiado. Antes por respetar a sus padres y hacer lo que ellos dijeran, se salió de la escuela para aprender a hacer las cosas en el hogar para su futuro marido. Ahora ella entiende que en cierto modo eso fue machismo por parte de su madre, ya que el pensar de antes era que las mujeres criaban a sus hijos y hacian las cosas del hogar y el hombre trabajaba. En estos tiempos que vivimos hoy podemos ver que no hay que tener machismo ya que un hombre puede hacer lo que hace una mujer y una mujer puede hacer lo que hace un hombre.
