Abstract
The coffee leaf miner (CLM) π˜“π˜¦π˜Άπ˜€π˜°π˜±π˜΅π˜¦π˜³π˜’ 𝘀𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘒 (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) is the main pest of coffee in the western central region of Puerto Rico. π˜”π˜ͺ𝘳𝘒𝘹 π˜ͺ𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘒𝘳π˜ͺ𝘴 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is one of the principal parasitoids of this pest present on the island. Three main objectives were carried out in this study: 1) to determine the number of instars of the CLM larvae under laboratory conditions, 2) to determine the number of instars in field collected samples and 3) to identify the instar (s) of π˜“. 𝘀𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘒 preferred by π˜”. π˜ͺ𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘒𝘳π˜ͺ𝘴 for its parasitation. Samples of leaves infested with CLM were obtained from the coffee growing zones in Puerto Rico. Colonies of π˜“. 𝘀𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘒 were reared under laboratory conditions and the larval head capsule widths were measured across their widest point, and the results were plotted. Larvae from the field collected samples were measured and analyzed in the same way. Four larval instars were observed in both cases (laboratory and field). The preferred instar of π˜“. 𝘀𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘒 by π˜”. π˜ͺ𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘒𝘳π˜ͺ𝘴 was determined under laboratory conditions. Coffee plants were oviposited by π˜“. 𝘀𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘒 during 48 hours, and when each instar was estimated to be formed, 150 parasitoids were introduced during 48 hours for its parasitization. The selection coefficient revealed that π˜”. π˜ͺ𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘒𝘳π˜ͺ𝘴 parasitized 1Λ’α΅— and 2ⁿᡈ instar with a 60% and 63% respectively. Instars 3ʳᡈ and 4α΅—Κ° were not parasitized.
