Abstract

Estrella Pagán Wiscovich is a nice and sweet 70 year old lady who shares her journey of life with us. She starts by talking about her childhood. Estrella came from a poor family. Her father was in the military and took care of his parents and Estrella, with only one job that didn’t pay much. Estrella got treated like a soldier, she had a lot of chores and had to walk three kilometers to school. Growing up she decided she was going to be a doctor, so she could come out of the poverty. During elementary school and high school, Estrella, had some help from teachers that made an impact in her life, and created an internal love for helping others. After graduation high school, Estrella went to college where she started studying Biology, but found that it wasn’t her passion. In her second year of college, Estrella fell in love, got married and had three kids. Estrella had a very delicate body, so her first pregnancy was so dangerous, she ended up being in a comma for almost one month. Short time passed and things did not go well for Estrella and her husband, so they decide to get a divorce. At this point, Estrella finds herself alone, working a night job with three kids to feed. She then moves back with her father and starts helping the kinder-garden teacher where her children studied. She decides to become a teacher and goes back to college. After she gets her degree she finds a job at a school in a poor sector of Cabo Rojo, she identified with the people there, because they grew up like her. She worked for thirty-six years which were the best of her life.

Estrella Pagán Wiscovich es una simpática y dulce señora de 70 años que nos comparte su camino de vida. Empieza hablando de su infancia. Estrella provenía de una familia pobre. Su padre estaba en el ejército y cuidaba de sus padres y de Estrella, con un solo trabajo que no pagaba mucho. A Estrella la trataban como a un soldado, tenía muchas tareas y tenía que caminar tres kilómetros hasta la escuela. Al crecer decidió que iba a ser doctora, para poder salir de la pobreza. Durante la escuela primaria y secundaria, Estrella recibió ayuda de maestros que marcaron su vida y crearon un amor interno por ayudar a los demás. Después de graduarse de la escuela secundaria, Estrella fue a la universidad donde comenzó a estudiar biología, pero descubrió que no era su pasión. En su segundo año de universidad, Estrella se enamoró, se casó y tuvo tres hijos. Estrella tenía un cuerpo muy delicado, por lo que su primer embarazo fue tan peligroso que terminó en coma durante casi un mes. Pasó poco tiempo y las cosas no iban bien para Estrella y su marido, por lo que deciden divorciarse. En este punto, Estrella se encuentra sola, trabajando de noche con tres niños que alimentar. Luego regresa con su padre y comienza a ayudar a la maestra de jardín de infantes donde estudiaron sus hijos. Decide convertirse en maestra y vuelve a la universidad. Después de obtener su título encuentra trabajo en una escuela en un sector pobre de Cabo Rojo, se identificó con la gente de allí, porque crecieron como ella. Trabajó durante treinta y seis años que fueron los mejores de su vida.
