Publication Rulebased expert system to infer biological pathways in rhodobacter sphaeroides(2005) Córdova-Bermeo, Maritza E.; Ramírez-Vick, Jaime E.; College of Engineering; Rodríguez-Martínez, Manuel; Rivera-Vega, Pedro I.; Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Portela-Gaudier, GenockA better method for functional analysis of the genes is the identification of biological pathways, since these provide information about the expression and regulation of genes. The search of these pathways is a complex task due to the intricate of its relations and data heterogeneity. The identified pathways in Rhodobacter sphaeroides are almost nonexistent, which is necessarily a method to help to this intention. A biological pathway prediction rulebased expert system was developed in JESS, which is capable of inferring reactions using its inherent recursive capacity, between or around specific molecules (either proteins or xenobiotics) connecting individual reactions steps, which are stored in a database for the later validation by human experts. It is used a database called BioPathDB, which contains information on the bacterium R. sphaeroides, which is populated from biological databases existing on the Internet and/or in data published in peerreviewed journals.
